Creating a home that truly aligns with your Core Desire is about more than just aesthetics; it’s a pathway to greater well-being and functionality. When your environment reflects what you truly need—whether it’s connection, tranquility, or energy—you’re setting yourself up for a space that supports your daily life, reduces stress, and enhances your ability to achieve your goals.
For instance, when one of my clients was able to create a home office that reflected a calming, focused atmosphere, she noticed a significant shift. Where she previously felt overwhelmed, she now had a space that encouraged productivity and eased her anxiety, helping her approach each day with confidence. These changes in our surroundings can help us relate to ourselves and others better, increase our productivity, and even reduce anxiety.
Tip 1: Set Your Intentions
Setting an intention before diving into design decisions helps narrow down choices and prevent the impulse to add items that don’t serve your purpose. When you have a clear idea of how you want the space to work for you, you’re more likely to stay focused, saving both time and money by bypassing colors, textures, and designs that don’t fit your goal.
For example, a client with a small townhome couldn’t decide what energy she wanted for her work-from-home area. Should it be fun and energizing, or calm and grounding? Once she defined her intention as needing a calming space to balance her fast-paced sales calls, we chose soft, soothing colors that created a more tranquil setting, aligning her workspace with her Core Desire for calm.
Tip 2: Use an Intention Tray to Center Your Space
One of the simplest yet powerful ways to bring your Core Desire to life is with an intention tray. This versatile tool allows you to create a dedicated space in any room that encourages you to pause, reset, and reconnect with your intentions. It’s perfect for establishing a mini “reset zone” that doesn’t require a full redesign or major expense.
Creating Your Tray: Start with a tray that resonates with you—it could be a rustic wood tray, a sleek metal one, or anything that complements your decor. Then, select a few items that visually and emotionally align with your Core Desire.
If your Core Desire is productivity, consider creating a WFH productivity tray that brings beauty and functionality to your workspace. Start with a tray that reflects your style, and add items that support your workday flow. For example, include essentials like a set of beautiful pens, a stylish stapler, and scissors. A date book or planner can be a central piece, helping you keep track of goals and appointments while adding a touch of elegance to your setup.
This simple arrangement helps make your workspace feel inviting and organized, encouraging you to stay focused and motivated throughout the day. By surrounding yourself with thoughtfully selected items, you’re creating a workspace that’s not only functional but also visually inspiring—a perfect setup for productivity.
Place your intention tray in a spot you frequently pass or sit by, like a coffee table, bedside table, or even a kitchen counter. Having this collection of meaningful objects within reach offers a gentle reminder of what matters to you and gives you a moment to refocus during busy days.
Why the Intention Tray Works:
This method is easy to personalize and doesn’t require a significant overhaul. Each time you see or use your tray, it’s a reminder to slow down, center yourself, and reconnect with what you want to feel in your space. An intention tray is a simple, elegant way to make your Core Desire an active part of your daily life. And it doubles up as decor when you aren’t using it.
Tip 3: Choose Colors that Reflect Your Core Desire
Color has a significant impact on how we feel, and selecting the right shades can energize or calm your space in alignment with your Core Desire. I like to categorize colors as “energizing” or “calming” rather than the traditional “warm” or “cool.” This shift in mindset helps make the color-selection process more intentional and tailored to your needs.
There’s a common misconception that calming spaces have to be bland or boring to be effective, but that’s not true! Visual interest is still essential, even in rooms meant for relaxation. For example, one of my clients with ADHD initially had a bedroom in soft creams and blues, but she found it too dull. To create a more engaging and supportive environment, we used various shades of blue in a color-blocking design. This added depth and visual interest, while still maintaining a calm and cohesive look. The added energy from the colors gave her the stimulation she needed without feeling overwhelming.
Home Therapy Tip: Think about how colors make you feel rather than following general “rules” about color psychology. You can create a calming effect with dynamic colors, as long as they align with your Core Desire.
Tip 4: Embrace Natural Light and Thoughtful Lighting
Lighting is foundational in setting the mood of a room. Natural light, in particular, can have a transformative effect on any space, while artificial lighting allows for more flexibility in creating ambiance.
For a softer look, consider using dimmable lights, floor lamps, or even candle lighting to replace harsh overhead lighting. I also recommend LED battery-operated lights where traditional wiring isn’t possible. These are fantastic for picture lighting, helping to highlight family portraits or inspiring landscapes. One client had an empty wall that felt neglected, so we used LED picture lights to spotlight a family photo from a memorable trip, making the wall feel meaningful and alive.
Tip 5: Integrate Natural Elements for Balance and Freshness
Bringing natural elements into your home adds texture and warmth, grounding the space. Not only do plants and natural materials like wood or stone elevate your decor, but they can also enhance memory and focus.
I often suggest ZZ plants and pothos for low-light areas. These plants thrive in lower light and make great additions to bookshelves, mantles, or open shelving. For example, greenery in a home office can help reduce stress and improve productivity, creating a refreshing, balanced environment that aligns with your Core Desire for calm or focus.
Tip 6: Keep Clutter in Check to Clear the Mind
Clutter can disrupt the energy in a home, making it difficult to feel calm or focused. Keeping your space organized allows for mental clarity, and a great way to tackle this is with intentional decluttering techniques.
A favorite method of mine is the Holding Box approach. When my daughter recently decided to clean out her closet, we used this method to help her be more thoughtful. Instead of tossing everything into a garbage bag, she placed items she was unsure about into a holding box for 48 hours. After taking time to reflect, she returned to the items, assigning each one an intention and purpose before either keeping or letting go of it.
Tip 7: Create Flexible Furniture Arrangements
Flexible furniture arrangements help bring zones to life, especially in multipurpose areas. I love **swivel chairs** for family rooms connected to kitchens, where people can turn and join conversations without moving seats. Arrangements like this are perfect for homes focused on connection, allowing the flow of conversation to feel natural and inclusive.
Taking time to reflect on your Core Desires and making intentional design decisions is a rewarding process. When each part of your home is arranged with thought and purpose, you’re not just creating a beautiful space—you’re setting the stage for a more supportive, fulfilling life.
