Summer is ending soon, and I’m missing our care-free beach days already. So I’m considering turning my guest room into something beachy and bright! There are a few essentials that you can always rely on when it comes to room refreshes. That’s why I am excited to share 4 easy steps to a beachy bedroom.
Step 1. Bedroom Furniture
I always start with the biggest item in the room. And for bedrooms, the obvious foundation is the bed.
I was very pleased to discover Walmart has some incredible and affordable coastal furniture. One beachy item in particular caught my eye. Just look at this South Shore Lionel Queen Platform Bed! If you’re curious what I would choose for a full room refresh, this would be it!
It’s always a plus when you can find an item that has some versatility and can blend nicely with other styles should you ever want to change up the theme later. With this bed, the horizontal headboard is reminiscent of of shiplap so it also fits with a modern rustic or even modern farmhouse vibe. The bed can stay the same! If you are fickle like me when it comes to home decor, it is nice to purchase foundation pieces that can stay consistent and cohesive. In this way, you can indulge in your penchant for different pillows, art and textiles and not feel guilty!
You can mix it in with elements of boho pillows and vintage rugs to add a bit of a beachy boho feel. This boho pouf is so cute!
Step 2: Breezy Bedding
White bedding is so fresh and clean and I tend to use white bedding for my clients as well as in my own home. Cool neutrals such as lighter blue tints can be just as comfy and inviting as white. These colors are a perfect backdrop for your beachy pillows, throw blankets, etc.
But I wouldn’t be satisfied with just a plain solid color. While that would work for other themes or something more minimalist, it feels flat and one dimensional when trying to convey a beach where there are so many different surfaces. When picking neutral textiles, I always bee line towards something with texture or pattern.
Cut to the Jacquard Chambray Comforter Set from Walmart. It was exactly what I wanted! Have you heard of Jacquard before? Even if you haven’t, I’m pretty sure you have seen this method of looming fabric.
Here’s some Bedding 101 facts for you. Jacquard is a type of fabric weaving used by the Jacquard loom. Instead of printing the pattern directly on top of the fabric, common patterns such as fleur-de-lis, silhouettes of flowers or leaves, and paisley patterns are weaved into the fabric. Over time the loom was used to make more modern patterns.
So while I definitely wouldn’t have chosen a more traditional Jacquard fleur-de-lis pattern bedding for my beachy bedroom, this casual diamond pattern was ideal. It gives texture in the most neutral yet refined manner.
Step 3: Boho Baskets
You may be thinking, “but Anita, I don’t know if I want a completely coastal look!” This is where the fun begins! Even the most coastal of coastal home design brands have incorporated natural elements such as jute, bamboo and, of course, baskets.
Baskets make me SO happy! They are light and uber functional in literally ANY space in your home. Toys, shoes, books, miscellaneous clutter, and even plants, baskets can instantly give purpose and organization. You can literally throw anything into the baskets and clean the space up in mere minutes. It’s the most satisfying feeling!
These baskets from Walmart can last you forever! Well okay, maybe not forever, but it will last through many a room refresh as they can rotate anywhere you need.
For this bedroom, they add an element of boho dreaminess that is both coastal as well as eclectic. And as with the bed, the versatility makes it easy to fit in with different styles.
Step 4: The Artful Touch
The last step to complete the beachy bedroom look is art. Adding this artful touch can really make a significant design impact. And I’m the first to admit that I’m extremely picky about what art I curate for myself or clients.
So you can imagine how I scrutinized Walmart’s offering of framed art. And I am really pleased to report that you can really find some good stuff here! One of my favorite looks is beach photography. It is exudes the best relaxation mode.
“Beach Life” really spoke to me and it will look stunning in the guest bedroom!
So here is a great design board that I made for all you visual learners out there!
What I love about this beachy bedroom look is that it is still very neutral and can easily stand the test of time. You can swap out pillows but for the most part it will be a classic look. You won’t feel like you have to update by the next bedroom trend. If you’re on a budget, this is a very important criteria for bedroom refreshes.
So happy that I have this opportunity to share wonderful design ideas no matter what the season is. But I have to admit, summer is definitely my favorite season of all time. How about you? You still have time to do a quick refresh for summer with my ideas. Good luck and as always, don’t forget to show me your ideas too!
Happy day!
Anita
