Summer is quickly approaching and I find myself happy and yet a bit panicked. Afterall, what do I do with 3 kids at home every day for 3 months?
Isn’t this the annual question all moms ask ourselves each May?
When we first moved into this home, I was ecstatic over the dark espresso colored wood floors.
I had wanted this for so long!
To my dismay, I realized very early on that there is a price to pay for darker colored floors.
Every speck of dust, lint, dirt, smushed food — everything and anything showed up!
Even minutes after I mopped it!
Today, I want to share my 3 secrets to summer floor care! Read on to find out how to keep your floors spic and span when kids and pets really challenge the joy of keeping a clean home.
3 Secrets to Summer Floor Care: Cleaning Solution
I have tried the gamut of wood floor cleaning solutions. Recently, I tried Swiffer WetJet Wood quick dry solution and I love it!
One of my pet peeves is that I mop the floor clean and before it is dry, my kids step all over it with their bare feet. Or even worse, with their socks on!
Then, it leaves their footprints and I have to re-mop it.
With the quick dry solution, I am able to have a clean and dry floor without the hassle of waiting a long time to dry.
Finding a kid and pet friendly solution is also really important to me. With the knowledge that Swiffer does not use harsh chemicals, I happily let my kids play as soon as the floors are dry.
Summer time is a great time to get the kids involved in chores. It takes 10 days to start a habit. For 3 months, if you can find chores that your children can work into their routine, then you’ll be set up for success when it’s time for back-to-school!
3 Secrets to Summer Floor Care: Dehumidifier
Whether you live in a dry or humid area, summer weather can really affect the longevity of your floors.
Even if you live in a dry area, having a climate-controlled room to preserve your floors can be very helpful!
For those who live in extremely humid areas, a dehumidifier is a must. One of the biggest enemies of wood floors is humidity.
If you are wondering what the ideal level for humidity is, suggested humidity levels are between 35-55%. Additional dangers of high humidity are warping and bubbling.
The summer heat and humidity can also affect color and shine.
3 Secrets to Summer Floor Care: Floor Mat, Rugs and Shoe Organizers
Summer time invites lots of outdoor excursions to the beach, parks and day-trips which means increased traffic flow in and out of the house.
The importance of a floor mat before entering the house is essential in minimizing dirt and grime that is brought in by shoes.
I love to do a 1-2 punch where I put a nice floor mat by the door, then add a pretty basket for the kids and guests to throw their shoes in a pinch.
Everything looks organized and no additional dirt is brought in which makes me and my floors very happy!
An extra bonus of layering rugs is the protection of your lovely hardwood floors. I absolutely love layering rugs as an aesthetic design visual. However, the area that it covers really protects the floor beneath. Talk about a win-win!
It is very surprising how the fine grit and small stones brought in by shoes can really shorten the life of your wood floors with scratches and wear over time.
I hope this prepares you for the upcoming summer hustle and bustle on your floors! I am so relieved to have the Swiffer WetJet Wood to help me keep these dark, sexy floors clean.”
Happy day!
